before Bell went to PPPoE in, oh, summer 1999?, they were using 2 hour DHCP leases and there were enough devices on each subnet that, if you turned your computer off at night, when you turned it back on in the morning, the DHCP server would assign a different IP. Or if the pool of IPs assigned to a given network is so small that reuse is necessary - e.g. because they split a node, and therefore your old IP is no longer able to be renewed. The only way the same MAC gets a different IP, pretty much, is if the subnets assigned to your area change, e.g. Standard DHCP implementation will give an IP to a given MAC address, and then that device will renew its lease and get reassigned the same IP, etc indefinitely. Why is not receiving much attention from the Rogers community if the users are "essentially" getting static IP addresses that would allow for easy tracking by websites. Does Rogers "lock" the assigned public IP address to the MAC address of the modem (or whatever device attached to it in bridge mode)? So there is no way for the end-user to send a command or click on a setting in the modem's admin control to release the old public IP address and request a new public IP address. I am surprised to hear that I would need to use a workaround solution.
